Nancy Benjamin
is a founding partner of Books By Design, where she manages a wide range of projects, specializing in textbooks and university press books. Before co-founding Books By Design in 1992 with the goal of bringing design, editorial, and production services under one roof, she was a freelance book packager for many years. Prior to that, she was on staff as managing editor for Curtin & London, a photography book publisher, and production editor for Winthrop Publishers, a subsidiary of Prentice Hall.

 

Alison Fields
joined Books By Design in June 2004. She has many years’ experience in book publishing as well as in the software industry. Her publishing experience includes staff positions at Curtin & London and Winthrop Publishers and freelance work for Bedford/St. Martin’s, Houghton Mifflin, and Microsoft Press. Her software industry experience includes usability testing and technical editing. She has held staff positions at Trellix Corp., OneSource Information Services, Lotus Development Corp., and Digital Equipment Corp., and worked as a consultant for Fleet Bank Financial Services and Eastman Kodak Co.

 

Carol Keller
joined Books By Design in 1998 after years of freelancing in publishing. Her specialties include illustration (electronic or hand-drawn maps, how-to diagrams, charts, graphs), typesetting, and design. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, where she studied interior architecture and textiles. Before working in publishing she was on staff at Perry Dean Stahl & Rogers as an architectural illustrator and graphic designer.

 

Herb Nolan
is a founding partner of Books By Design, where he specializes in linguistics, writing, and communications textbooks. Before co-founding Books By Design, he was Managing Editor of Science and Mathematics in Addison Wesley’s Higher Education Division. Prior to that, he was Production Manager at Winthrop Publishers and Senior Editor at Prentice Hall.

 

Janis Owens
joined Books By Design in 2002 after working as a freelance designer for more than 20 years doing trade and textbook interior and cover designs as well as exhibition brochures and catalogs for museums. Before that, she worked as a senior trade book designer for Little, Brown. Her work has received design awards from the New England Museum Association, the Bookbuilders of Boston New England Book Show, the AIGA Fifty Books, and the Association of American University Presses.
